Clarifying Your Values For Real Inner Power.

Clarifying your values is the first step to knowing what you want and why. At this stage, you may not even know what truly matters, or you may not have acknowledged it yet! Fundamental to what you want to do and why you want to do it are your values. Knowing what you value is a shining light on what is truly important to you and where you will find real inner power. If you are thinking that this is just coachy jargon, I wouldn’t blame you: I also have an aversion to spiels and hook lines, but real inner power simply means a deep confidence in yourself, your self-concept, values and the direction you want your life to go in. Without it you may struggle to get where you want to go, whilst retaining your wellbeing.

Clarifying your values allows you to connect with your purpose, remain motivated, and find real meaning and fulfilment . If you’re feeling stuck, unmotivated, or like you’re chasing someone else’s version of success, WHOLE coaching can help you move towards a life that feels authentically yours.

In WHOLE™ Coaching, W stands for What and Why – purpose, inner power, and your personal definition of a meaningful life and success.

The Importance of “What” and “Why”

Many people spend years living a life and chasing goals that don’t truly belong to them, which are driven by outside expectations instead of their true desires. Careers, relationships, or habits often follow a “should” rather than a “want”, but fulfilment doesn’t come from doing what looks right on paper, it comes from living in alignment with what matters most to you. When I was at this stage in my life, pondering on my work, I had a sense that “that is what I do and who I am”. I couldn’t even see a way that I could do anything else. I was actually passionate about part of my work but had failed to examine what I loved about it, what I didn’t and what other kind of work could now offer me more meaning and purpose. The story I was living by was that I was defined by what I did for work. Really looking at this belief gave me the clarity I could find all that I valued in that story elsewhere because I had actually ceased to find strength and meaning in what I was doing.

Let me be clear at this point: You don’t have to throw it all out, but you do need to know what you want to keep, what you still need to find and why you want it.

Clarifying your values allows you to really examine what is missing for you and what you already have. This in turn enables you to shift the gears of your life toward deeper meaning and motivation.

Your what is the direction. Your why is the fuel that gets you there.

Letting Go of the “Shoulds”

It can often feel easier to follow the path others expect you to walk, however, when your decisions are based on fear, habit, or pleasing others, it’s hard to feel truly fulfilled. Real inner power and alignment begin when you pause and ask yourself: What actually matters to me?

Coaching for fulfilment enables you to realign with who you already are and let go of external expectations. Ask yourself the crucial question: what do you want your days to look like? Apart from sitting on a beach drinking cocktails! I mean once you are back from your holiday, what do you want your everyday life to be?

Clarifying Your Values for Intrinsic Motivation and Sustainable Change

When your goals align with your core values and tap into the activities where you naturally feel a sense of flow, motivation stops feeling like a push and starts feeling like a pull. This is the essence of intrinsic motivation, a deep, self-sustaining drive that arises not from external rewards, approval, or recognition, but from the pure enjoyment and meaning found in the activity itself. It’s the difference between forcing yourself to climb a mountain for the photo at the top versus climbing because the act of moving, breathing, and being immersed in nature makes you feel fully alive.

Psychological research shows that intrinsic motivation is one of the most powerful and enduring forms of motivation. When you pursue goals for their own sake – because they are meaningful to you, or because the process itself is rewarding – you gain:

  • Greater persistence, because your energy comes from within rather than from fleeting external incentives.
  • Deeper fulfilment, because you are doing what matters to you rather than what is expected of you.
  • Higher wellbeing, as you spend more time doing things that feel aligned, purposeful, and alive.

Get Into Flow

This is where flow, comes in. Flow is that state of total absorption where time seems to disappear, distractions fall away, and you’re completely engaged in what you’re doing. You might have felt it when singing, writing, running, or solving a challenging problem. The experience is both demanding and rewarding, requiring your full attention but giving back a sense of joy and clarity. Flow is often described as the sweet spot between challenge and skill. You feel it when the activity is meaningful and stretches you just enough,

Clarifying your values is the key to finding where this intrinsic energy lives. It helps you see what you already love doing, where you feel most ‘in the zone,’ and how to create goals that are not only achievable but deeply nourishing. When your goals grow out of your values and lead you into flow, you don’t have to force motivation. You will feel compelled to do your chosen activity, like a current you can step into every day.

According to psychological research, intrinsic goals lead to:

  • Greater persistence
  • Deeper fulfilment
  • Higher wellbeing

Clarifying your values helps you uncover what you already love doing, where you feel most alive, and how to build meaningful goals. This is turn energises you and help you experience daily flow and inner power.

Redefining Success by Clarifying Your Values

Values are the principles, qualities, and ways of being that matter most to you. They are the things you believe are worth standing for, living by, and moving towards. The word “value” itself comes from the idea of something being worthy, important, or of great significance. Unlike goals, which are things you can achieve or tick off a list, values are ongoing directions that guide how you live and make decisions. They reflect who you want to be at your core and how you want to show up in the world, regardless of circumstances. When you’re clear on your values, they become like a compass, helping you navigate challenges and stay aligned with what truly matters. Even when life feels uncertain or overwhelming.

Sometimes, the biggest breakthrough comes from letting go of old definitions of success. This shift can open space for a more meaningful version of achievement which reflects your truth.

  • Do your current goals reflect your beliefs and principles, or someone else’s?
  • Are you chasing approval, or alignment?
  • Are your goals grounded in clarified values?

Redefining success is central to personal alignment. That’s why in the next post; we’ll explore what you may need to let go of more deeply: H – Honesty.
